The latter function is achieved by a Viterbi decoder, which provides high performance for convolutive codes. As explained in Appendix 3.2, it computes metrics, i.e. distances from the received sequence to some ideal coded sequences, in order to determine which one offers the maximum likelihood. The convolutive code may be concatenated with a powerful Reed-Solomon code that requires specific synchronization. Another method for decoding is the sequential suboptimal technique that permits the use of a higher length of code constraint (e.g. K = 36), which, in the case of low data rate links, permits improvement of the transmission quality by a simple process. The regeneration itself consists of interpreting the received analogue signal at sampled instants and deciding what data word each symbol represents. Ensuring the best likelihood of a right decision consists of reducing the uncertainties and distortions around the received signal. Among them, the sampling instant is optimized by the clock recovery and the phase of the received complex signal is coherently demodulated by the carrier recovery. But some more loops like AGC, DC offset compensation, quadrature correction and possibly adaptive filtering should be added to minimize the distortion. Contrarily to burst modems for TDMA or packet transmissions, FDMA/TDM (e.g. IDR) modems have to cope only with a continuous flow of data. This makes it possible to make extensive use of feedback loops for carrier, clock, gain recoveries, etc., which permits very fine adaptive tuning of receiver parameters and results in a BER curve very near to the theoretical one at any rate, any carrier frequency, or any environment condition.

Oversight and procedures should exist to restrict physical access to all local, remote, service provider, and storage facility environments.
